I was asked by costume designer Gethin Bevan to make this seagull mask and cape for a Royal Welsh production of the play 'Pomona'. this process involved fittings with the actor to ensure the mask was comfortable and allowed adequate visibility for the performance. Due to budget limitations I made this mask out of primarily scrap materials.
Pomona Seagull Mask - Making Of
base of the mask sculpted out of strips of cardboard reinforced with wire. covered in a layer of gum tape and PVA for strength.
eyeballs made from plastic bauble, painted on the inside to prevent scuffing and maintain glossy, plastic sheen. mesh triangles inserted at actors eyeline for visibility.
feather texture created using strips of scrap calico, frayed at long edges and folded over. glued to base in layers. brushed and trimmed to appear scruffy. Feathers for cape made in a similar manner by layering strips and sewing a line of tight zig zag stitch down center of each strip.
